US President George W Bush has repeated his call for Turkey to be admitted to the EU, despite being rebuked by France for interfering in Europe's affairs.

Mr Bush told students in Istanbul the US believed that "as a European power, Turkey belongs in the European Union".

*******************************************************

On Monday, French President Jacques Chirac denounced Mr Bush's call for Turkey to get a date for EU acceptance.

Mr Chirac said the US president had gone too far, adding that his remarks were like Mr Chirac telling the US how to manage relations with Mexico.

Correspondents say US-French friction remains, despite attempts to heal rifts left by the Iraq war which France bitterly opposed.

Speaking on the sidelines of the summit the following day, Mr Chirac said this was none of Mr Bush's business.

"Not only did he go too far, he ventured into territory which is not his concern," he said.

Correct, Monsieur Chirac, correct!

"Mr Chirac said the US president had gone too far, adding that his remarks were like Mr Chirac telling the US how to manage relations with Mexico."

...BUT THEN...

"Correspondents say US-French friction remains, despite attempts to heal rifts left by the Iraq war which France bitterly opposed."

I'd say France is not setting a very good example of minding it's own business, and has little room to talk. I wonder what the real reason is that Chirac does not want Turkey in the EU? I have my suspicions, but time will tell.

BTW, there is a certain German who also has trouble minding his own business, I think. ;) :)

Schröder is only chancellor, not a president like the U.S. president.

Schröder's party "SPD" supports the idea of having Turkey in the EU, but over 85% of the German population are against it and more than 50% of the people with a "SPD" membership.

Schröder is caught in a multicultural agenda of his red-green coalition, but again does not represent the German population as a whole. 6 million turkish people are living in Germany and would likely vote "SPD" if Schröder supports a EU membership of Turkey. That's why Schröder emphasized the EU talks with Turkey. However, nobody here will support that knowing how the 'integration' with the Turks looks here (there is none... Turkish people rather live in self-created ghettos incl. own infrastructure) :)

Schröder's "SPD" is down to 20% overall and will very likely not survive the next elections, thus not being able to push this matter (the turkish one) any further anyway.

Mike - "Schröder's party "SPD" supports the idea of having Turkey in the EU, but over 85% of the German population are against it and more than 50% of the people with a "SPD" membership."

Why?

Because the CDU/CSU (the black union, the ones that wanted that Germany should support the war on Iraq) are a bunch of mildly-to-extatic Xenophobes. ;)

Oh...just a pipsqueak in the grand scheme of things, then. Damn, I thought he had some power.

Germany is a federal democracy which means that Schröder can't decide nearly nothing alone and where the votes for the chancellor party overall are not weighted in a central way. Schröder could have 70% votes for his party in the main elections, but what counts are the votes in every single country of the German federal system.

Even if his party is 100% behind him he cannot pass new laws for example without the agreement of the opposition (we have a institution here called "Bundesrat" which represenets the last step to pass new laws and where the majority of votes/voices are being held by the opposition).

The current German president even does not belong to any specific political party.

And this might have something to do with the Turkish-German situation....DAMN!!

Quote:

A lovesick man forced a plane into an emergency landing by shouting "Bomb! Bomb!" soon after take-off, German police say.

The 28-year-old had no bomb and did not try to take control of the plane.

None of the 150 other passengers or seven crew on the flight from Munich was hurt in the scare.

But the hoax attacker - who later said he was upset that his wife would not leave Germany with him - broke his leg jumping onto the tarmac after landing.

The unnamed Turkish man was being treated in hospital and was scheduled to be questioned by a judge.
