The only words that cause a cringe are ones that are politically correct (including "politically correct", lol). They also often cause my eyes to roll.
One radio host in my area has a list of "foghorn words" - anybody says 'em, they get the foghorn sound FX.
Here's the foghorn word list. I'd go along with most of them of as being either cringe or eye-roll worthy:
Appropriate / inappropriate
Especially bad when used in place of Right/Wrong.
Body Image
See "self esteem"
Bonding
May be used to describe the gluing together two pieces of wood. Other uses deserve a foghorn.
Closure
Being "done", just say that.
Coalition
See "community"
Cocoon
Insect behavior, does not occur in humans.
Community
When people gather for the purpose of being victimized.
Connectivity
There is no acceptable use for this word.
Consensus
When individuals with differing opinions agree on the worst possible course of action.
Dialogue
Just say "conversation"
Diversity
When used to define a "value". (OK when stated as a fact)
Empower
When the Government is asked to recognize a citizen's sexual preference, race, gender, background, or victim status.
Enabler
If you're able, you're able. If you're not, you're not.
Facilitate
There is no acceptable use for this word.
French culture
The French have no culture, just A couple of guys that can draw.
Human Resources
Rename it "The Personnel Dept" or abolish it.
Level the playing field
If you're building a child's playground, then it's OK, otherwise, you're just plain whining. Good teams kick the crap out of bad teams on level playing fields regularly.
Nurturer
Job requirement for Teacher or babysitter. Not a requirement for any public office.
Politically Correct
Two words as far apart in meaning as they are in the dictionary.
Proactive
You may be a pro and you may be active. You may not use vague meaningless terms like: "proactive".
Self Esteem
Usually an erroneous appraisal, anyway.
Skill
Only used for learned abilities, welding, carpentry ...
Survivor
One who insists on defining the remainder of their life by an unfortunate incident in their past.
Validate
Tickets require requests for validation; opinions or emotions don't.
Vision
(1)OK when used in describing eyesight.
(2)If you see the Virgin Mary in your back yard, then ya' got yourself a vision, otherwise, it's just an idea.
