not hardly, she's a domestic servant/nanny for her cousin who is married to some middle eastern dude, they have just moved from Singapore to Hong Kong for business purposes.

He makes a lot of money, beats his wife and treats my sis-in-law like slave labor. :rant

Yes I can believe that. However I believe it's way more than they could earn in the Phillippines.... I know a few maids who work here and they are buying property back in Manila.

On the flip side, some maids get treated abominably including the cases you hear of a woman pressing a hot iron into her maid's hand as she didn't iron properly! Fortunately the maid won the case.

yes, the largest import into the Philippines is currency from Filipinos working out of the country. When I was in Cebu in 1995, minimum wage was $3 a day, if they could find work at all. Some jobs were rotated. Only the prettiest girls were hired to work in the stores and banks, etc. Filipinos place a lot of emphasis on looks and of course, status.

And all the best musicians AREN'T in the Phillippines save for a few bands in Manilla - I haven't been back for a few years. Been to the Phillippines twice - love it actually - it's hard work sometimes but it was really satisfying too. They loved me cause I travel with an acoustic guitar. Many a night spent on various beaches singing songs - mostly Beatles songs :wgrin
